Manitoba is a two-system province. Natural gas was the main heating energy for 52% of households in 2023 and electricity for 33% (Statistics Canada), and the provincial efficiency utility funds heat pumps directly. A furnace-led company here should be built to win both the gas replacement and the electric-home conversion.
Two kinds of homeowner
Winnipeg dominates the market, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson as smaller centres. Across them, a furnace company meets two quite different buyers:
- Gas-heated homes replacing an ageing furnace, often with an air conditioner on the same visit.
- Electrically heated homes with an electric furnace, baseboards or electric boiler, who are being encouraged towards heat pumps.
The second group is large enough that ignoring it caps your growth. But winning it takes heat-pump skills, a different quote and a different conversation, so it needs a deliberate decision rather than a sideline.
One of the longest heating seasons in the south
Few places in southern Canada need heat for as many months of the year as Manitoba does, and its prairie cold is deep as well as long. For the business, that stretches demand rather than spiking it: the no-heat calls start early and keep coming. It also means equipment runs harder and ages faster, which is good for replacement volume and puts pressure on crew capacity. Plan for a season that starts in October and doesn't let up until spring with our capacity planning work.
Programs that change the quote, as of October 2026
- Air Source Heat Pump Rebate. Efficiency Manitoba lists $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate air-source heat pump and $1,500 for ductless in an existing primary residence. Registered suppliers can earn a $100 bonus on applications with an F280 heat-load calculation before 2027-03-31.
- Affordable Home Energy Program. Qualifying homes that currently rely on an electric furnace, baseboards or an electric boiler can receive a heat pump at no cost, with the work done by contractors registered with the program. Re-confirm eligibility with the program before you mention it.
- Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program. Manitoba signed the first of these federal partnerships, announced 2025-09-12, with Efficiency Manitoba delivering no-cost retrofits to low- and median-income households.
- Oil to Heat Pump Affordability. The federal grant stopped taking Manitoba applications on 2026-07-31.
The ducted heat-pump rebate matters most for a furnace company: a homeowner replacing a gas furnace and old air conditioner can put a ducted cold-climate heat pump on the same ductwork, keep the new furnace as backup, and receive a rebate. That is a dual-fuel sale your option sheet should show.
Winnipeg versus the rest of the province
Winnipeg companies compete on density: many homes, short drives and plenty of rivals. Outside the city, in Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler or Thompson, the economics turn on travel time and on being the company people already know. A Winnipeg firm serving rural customers should price drive time explicitly rather than averaging it into city jobs. A rural company, meanwhile, often has a stronger case for a care plan, because customers value a local firm that will actually come in January.
Regulators
Gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licences fall under the Office of the Fire Commissioner. Apprenticeship Manitoba handles trade certification and WCB Manitoba covers workers' compensation. We link these for orientation only.
How we'd approach a Manitoba furnace company
- Decide on the electric-home market. Either build a heat-pump team and become a registered supplier, or knowingly focus on gas. Drifting in between costs money.
- Put dual-fuel on every furnace-plus-AC quote, with the Efficiency Manitoba rebate linked and dated, using the repair-or-replace process.
- Price the long season properly. Overtime and wear across a long winter belong in the replacement margin.
- Use care plans to space out the work, since a long season leaves little room for catch-up.
Frequently asked questions
What heat-pump rebates are open in Manitoba?
When we checked in October 2026, an existing primary residence could get $2,000 from Efficiency Manitoba for a ducted cold-climate air-source heat pump, or $1,500 for a ductless one. Check its site for current terms before quoting.
Do electric-furnace homes matter to a gas furnace company?
Yes. They are prospects for heat pumps, and some qualify for free heat pumps through Efficiency Manitoba's Affordable Home Energy Program. A company that can't serve them leaves that work to others.
Who issues gas permits in Manitoba?
The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil burner permits and tradesperson licences. We only link to it; questions go to them and your licensed staff.
How long is the Manitoba heating season for planning purposes?
Among the longest in southern Canada. Plan stock, crews and care-plan visits as if winter runs from October well into spring.
